ARTIST

CHARLES EDMUND RENE HIS

Born in rural town of Colombes in France in 1877, Rene His was the pupil of well-known artists Jules Lefebvre and T Tobert-Fleury. Although he was most heavily influenced by Henri Biva’s meticulous style and feeling for nature which inspired him to strive for perfection in his depiction of the woodland and river banks. Most well known for his detailed landscape paintings, Rene His travelled throughout France during his lifetime, painting landscapes. He regularly visited Provence, where he would capture the still-ness of the French rivers and tributaries. However he is also known to have made several trips to Algeria where he painted the local people. Rene His became a member of La Societe des Artistes Français in 1897, and he first exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1900. That same year he obtained an Honourable mention at the Universal Exhibition in Paris and he also won a bronze medal at the Paris Salon. Towards the end of his lifetime, Rene His became somewhat of a recluse and took little interest in public exhibitions. He focused his energy on becoming an expert in the portrayal of light and shade within a landscape, and became critically acclaimed for his detailed depiction of trees in their naturalness. His name can be found in the Dictionary of Artists of All Time by Benezit.
