ARTIST

ALFRED SISLEY

Alfred Sisley was born in Paris into a prosperous English merchant family. After a brief study of commerce in London, Sisley returned to Paris with the sole intention of becoming a painter. In 1862 Sisley enrolled at the cole des Beaux-Arts in the studio of Marc Gleyre where he met and became lifelong friends with Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Sisley was the only Impressionist artist to paint landscapes almost exclusively.
