ARTIST

ANTOINE AUGUSTE THIVET

Antoine Thivet was born in Paris in 1856.  He commenced his art education in the studio of Jean-Léon Gérôme, considered as one of the most important academic painters of his time, and where Thivet became deeply influenced by Gérôme’s historical and mythological subject matter.  The emergence of Impressionism towards the latter part of the nineteenth century in Paris, meant that Thivet introduced a looser brushstroke to his work and also referencing the modern urban life.   Thivet made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1877 where he continued to be successful with his exhibits for many years.  His expressive style and rich, mature palette bring to life the natural scenery of his reclining nudes and nymphs and lend substance to his exquisite portraits.
