ARTIST

LIONEL AGGETT

Lionel Aggett was a highly successful architect but at the age of fifty-three decided to follow his passion for landscapes and devote himself entirely to painting. Recognisable for his soft pastel landscapes of Venice and the Tuscan landscape, Aggett's love affair with Italy began in 1959 when he, as a young architectural scholar, visited Umbria and Tuscany. Aggett was also particularly drawn to the French landscape, capturing a profusion of colour in pastel; fresh young green foliage, lavender fields as far as the eye could see and burning carpets of red poppies. Working primarily in pastels, Aggett worked quickly and spontaneously and with an element of immediacy, creating subtle gradation of colour that perfectly captured the atmospheric qualities of the landscape.
