ARTIST

WILHELM KRAY

One of the finest figure painters of the nineteenth-century, Wilhelm Kray is renowned for his delicate and sensuous paintings of nudes, nymphs and goddesses, derived from the myths and stories of German folklore. Beautifully rendered, with a painstaking attention to detail, Krays delicate handling of paint and softness of brush established him as one of the foremost artists of this genre of painting. Kray began his artistic education in 1848 at the Royal Prussian Academy of Art in Berlin before moving to Paris where he trained in the studios of Alexandre Cabanel and Paul Baudry. Kray was profoundly influenced by their classically inspired, mythological and historical works feted by the French art establishment in the nineteenth-century and their influence can be clearly seen in his technique and choice of subject matter.
