FINE ART ASIA, HONG KONG 2016 REVIEW

Our 6th annual expedition to the Far East this last month cemented the galleries presence in the Asian art world, and whilst the exhibition continues to evolve and reinvent itself as the most important show for our collection in the Far East, we continue to build on our successful foundations in this exciting market.

We were delighted to be making our way again to Wan Chai and the Hong Kong Convention Centre, and had tailored our collection more specifically to the tastes of our clients over there. Knowledge of Western art and painters is fast gaining pace there and with this knowledge comes a sophistication of tastes. This year the excited response to our established Gladwell’s artists like Georges Robin and Alexandre Jacob reflected this shift towards outstanding Impressionist paintings.

Our headline painting by Claude Monet of Aiguille d’Etretat, Marée Basse, was much admired by Carrie Lam, Chief Secretary of the Special Administrative Region when she joined Glenn on our stand.  From 1883, Monet embarked upon one of his most iconic series of landscapes, focusing on the epic rock formations and awe-inspiring crags that jut out into the sea by Etretat. Many of these paintings of the cliffs are now in museums throughout the World, so to see one at Fine Art Asia was very well received by most of the 22,500 visitors to the show.

Fine Art Asia has become a key event in the international art calendar, reinforcing Hong Kong as a major global art hub, and the organisers remain committed to providing a high quality platform for international galleries to meet the growing number of keen and knowledgeable collectors from China and the Asian region.

Hong Kong nights contrast our busy days at the show and this year we had some delightful evenings spent with our established local collectors who tell us of their lives on the Islands. Stories ranged from the environmental issues to the story of Patrick the water buffalo destroying their gardens and feeding in the back yard. We gain an insight into a part of the globe that each year surprises, enchants and intoxicates the mind.

We will continue our adventures into this fascinating and ever growing part of the world, taking our new artists there and presenting the best that we can offer. The appreciation of the art that we take makes every trip worthwhile.
