Landscape Artist of the Year is an annual TV show, that celebrates artists of all styles and backgrounds to compete for the title of ‘Artist of the Year’, along with the chance to win a £10,000 commission for the permanent collection of a British institution and £500 of art materials from Cass Art. This amazing opportunity has attracted many extremely talented artists who have the chance to demonstrate their individual talents in a series of 8 episodes.

Filming took place this summer at a series of locations around the UK, including Loch Fyne, Inverarary Castle and Viking Bay. Martin was chosen to paint at Broadstairs Beach in Kent where eight artists had to set up on a small ‘pod’ and had four hours to paint the landscape in front of them.

The judges of the show included Kathleen Soriano, independent curator, Kate Bryan, art historian, and Tai Shan Schierenberg, award-winning artist. Kate Bryan describes what she is looking for:

“Landscape painting gives artists a real opportunity to be creative and thoughtful. I’m not looking for something ‘correct’ or ‘accurate,’ rather I want to see a particular scene through someone else’s eyes. I really recommend applying, everyone tells us how much they get out of it.”
