“On Top of The World” – What an action packed preview week at Gladwell & Patterson

Two fantastic dinners in the gallery entertaining our passionate Dolphyn collectors, enjoyable lunches out with clients, a packed and bustling preview, hundreds of soldiers, loyal friends aplenty and strong sales. What else could you need to bring good wishes and support from far and wide to two special artists?

All these are the hallmarks of a ‘normal’ preview week at Gladwell & Patterson.

Walter and Willem arrived on Monday excited for the week. One of the first requirements was to toast the week with good luck and to find a local Knightsbridge pub to replace the much loved Goat in Mayfair! This was duly settled and thoughts turned to that evening’s dinner for a collection of Willem’s most passionate followers.

The table was set with rich cloths of gold, a baroque feast for the eyes. Silver gleamed and beautiful fruits spilt across the table. Guests to the gallery dined as if in one of Willem’s renowned tableaux. The meal was a superb start to the week, full of great cheer and a convivial atmosphere. Meanwhile Walter had made a special night his own by attending a ‘Flanders’s Remembers’ concert at the Guard’s Chapel and then taking a small pilgrimage back to Mayfair, the Goat, a curry and to see Number 19.

On Tuesday evening Willem and Denise had their own “curry night” whilst Walter’s gallery guests settled down to a toy story dinner. Cars, figures and Apollo X rockets jostled for centre stage as the evening zipped along. Walter regaled us with tales of his paintings and the journeys he goes through in creating them. We were all enthralled by his passion and vision.

Wednesday was all change ready for the final art series night for local Property agents W.A.Ellis. This use of the gallery in spreading our love of art to our surrounding businesses has been great fun in 2014.

Thursday was a return to the “old style,” Mayfair preview. The champagne flowed as old friends enjoyed new works. The Dolphyn clan now included Walter’s wife, Inge, and friends and artists from Belgium including our own Ronny Moortgat. The excitement of the evening was fantastic and everyone said how they had enjoyed catching up again as well as seeing wonderful new paintings.

Friday saw a very special friend return to the gallery. Patricia Patterson, Bill’s widow who is now 85 made a very sprightly visit to the gallery for afternoon tea with Willem. A very poignant reunion after 10 years and one which they both very much enjoyed. Much reminiscing as well as a chance to look forward to next Thursday 27 November, the night we celebrate the 50th birthday of W.H.Patterson.
