Barques aux Lecques reflects Gaussen’s interest in working boats and coastal architecture. Inspired by Mediterranean ports, he employs broad, textured brushstrokes and warm tonal contrasts to suggest reflected light on water. His technique favours atmosphere over precision, capturing the quiet industry of harbour life with painterly confidence and a strong sense of place.

  • Adolphe-Louis Gaussen was born in 1871 in Marseilles: one of a new generation of artists hailing from the South of France. Having completed his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille, where he worked alongside his lifelong friend Jean-Baptiste Olive, Gaussen then painted in the studios of local artists Magaud and Guindon. After his training, he began working as a professional artist and almost immediately had his first exhibition at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1893.

From the start of his career, Gaussen focused his efforts on painting the Côte d’Azur. His love for the area and skill at capturing the French Riviera meant that Gaussen assumed the status of a local celebrity, particularly because he was one of the few painters depicting Marseille who originated from the city. While he worked panting coastal views and seascapes he was elevated to be the conservator at the Musée Cantini in Marseille, and in 1928 he was named an Official State Marine Painter.

Gaussen’s works are included in multiple collections around the world, including the Petit Palais Museum and Musée de l’Arte Moderne in Paris.
