The poppy continues to delight Kenneth and is a recurrent theme in his recent paintings. Whether the poppies are in a wildflower meadow, nestled amongst rocks from Kenneth’s Ballinaboy Garden or silhouetted against a vivid Irish sky, he is constantly drawn to the enduring challenge of capturing their simplicity of form in his bold, textured brushstrokes and palette knife swathes of colour. The tint and colour of the poppy varies so greatly, with season and light and movement. Sometimes the light shines entirely through the petal as though transparent, at other timesthe colour is opaque, creating what Kenneth describes as ‘an exhilarating impact’. Kenneth’spaintings of poppies enchant, and when he depicts them grouped in a great display, the impact can be tremendous.

  • Kenneth Webb is one of Irelands leading painters. Brought up in post-war Britain, from a young age Kenneth was inspired by the Gloucestershire countryside where he grew up. In 1974 Kenneth purchased the Ballinaboy Studio in Connemara on the west coast of Ireland, and this wonderful place has offered a multitude of inspiration to Kenneth for over forty years. Kenneths magnificent ethereal landscapes of Connemara, his colourful and textured paintings of poppies and his shimmering visions of his favoured waterlily pool are instantly recognisable for their vibrancy and gestural brushstrokes. So unique and striking are his paintings that over the past decade with our gallery, his work has amassed an international following culminating with the seminal exhibition Kenneth Webb at 90. Despite his 91 years, Kenneth is as prolific as ever and his work continues to explore creative boundaries.
