  • Widely considered one of Britain’s finest avian-artists, George Edward Lodge (1860 – 1954) brought together a naturalist’s approach and a falconer’s eye to create highly sought-after paintings of birds of prey. Born in Lincolnshire, he would soon travel the world in search of birds to paint, although he always maintained that he was most drawn to the Scottish Highlands.

His expertise in falconry lead to an active role in early wildlife conservation, to the extent that he was the first artist every elected to the Vice-Presidency of the British Ornithologists Union. While he did sell his works commercially during his career, Lodge was best known for illustrating scientific and zoological books. From his 377 illustrations for the magisterial Birds of the British Isles to the 89 plates for the New Zealand Government documenting their native birds, Lodge’s clarity of observation and detail shaped the way the public saw these animals for a generation.
