JOE HARGAN | A Little Red
Oil on Canvas
71 x 71 cms / 28 x 28 inches
Signed Hargan (lower left)
A vivid interior composition set against a warm terracotta wall, where framed portraits and a central landscape are arranged above a mantelpiece. Sniffy the Butler reclines, holding a glass of red wine, while in the foreground a seated woman in a dark dress faces outward, accompanied by a small dog. A bowl of fruit and decorative objects punctuate the scene, linking foreground and background. The painting employs strong colour contrasts and defined outlines, with fluid, expressive brushwork describing figures and setting, creating a structured yet animated domestic tableau with a distinct narrative character.
Joe Hargan was born in Glasgow, 1952. He studied drawing and painting at the Glasgow School of Art from 1970-74 under Danny Ferguson, James Robertson, and David Donaldson.
