JOE HARGAN | A Question of Balance
Oil on Canvas
95 x 95 cms / 37½ x 37½ inches
Signed Hargan (lower right)
A whimsical interior scene featuring a sharply dressed figure poised atop a striding dog mounted on a wheeled platform, set against a turquoise wall hung with framed paintings and decorative objects. To the left, a portrait of a woman with two hounds echoes the central motif, while to the right a Venetian view introduces architectural context. Carefully placed details - a vase of flowers, a pedestal bust and a dish of green apples - structure the composition. Crisp drawing and controlled, painterly handling define the forms, with contrasting areas of flat colour and refined detail contributing to a composed yet playful arrangement.
Joe Hargan was born in Glasgow, 1952. He studied drawing and painting at the Glasgow School of Art from 1970-74 under Danny Ferguson, James Robertson, and David Donaldson.
