STELLA SHAWZIN | Nursing Mother

7" x 15" x 8" / 17 x 38 x 21 cms

Bronze sculpture of a mother nursing her child.

Born in South Africa in 1920 and working across the world over a nearly-eighty-year career, Stella Shawzin’s work is defined by its quest to capture the moving body. Becoming a professional artist in her thirties, her initial career in acting and dance clearly informed her understanding of movement, generating her work’s gravity-defying qualities.

As she herself observed: “My main theme is the human form in its infinite variety. I am terribly excited by the never ending variations in position, feeling, movement, its animal quality. It is limitless… timeless”.
