TERENCE GILBERT | Paris Evening from Montmartre
Signed 'T. J. Gilbert' (lower left)
Oil on Panel
61 x 71 cms / 24 x 28 inches
Paris Evening from Montmartre presents a wide view across the rooftops of Paris at sunset, seen from the elevated slopes of Montmartre. The foreground shows the slate roofs and upper façades of Parisian buildings, their windows beginning to glow as evening approaches. Beyond them, the skyline stretches across the horizon where the Eiffel Tower rises prominently at the centre of the composition, with the dome of Les Invalides visible nearby. Montmartre has long been known for its panoramic views across the capital, attracting generations of painters who have recorded the changing atmosphere of the city from its hilltop vantage point. Terence Gilbert continues this tradition, focusing on the shifting light that settles over Paris at dusk.
Terence Gilbert, trained at Camberwell Art School. Following a career in illustration, he went on to become the wonderful equestrian and cityscape artist we know today.
A native Londoner, he has a deep passion for cityscapes, especially London’s landmarks like Battersea Power Station and St. Paul’s Cathedral. His artwork captures the essence of urban life, extending to the streets of New York, Parisian views, and Venetian architecture, often painted in situ before translating them into oils. In addition to cityscapes, Gilbert is renowned for equestrian portraits, painting famous racehorses and sports figures. His notable commissions include portraits of HM The Queen with President Reagan, and HM King Hussein of Jordan. Exhibited globally, Gilbert’s work continues to be in high demand.
Originally represented by W.H. Patterson in London, we continue to work with Terrence Gilbert to this day.
