LUIS MUNTANE MUNS
Born in Mataró, 25 August 1899. At 12 years old he was accepted as a student at the School of Fine Art and Crafts in Barcelona (La Lonja). It was there that he met the great painter José Mongrell, who guided him through the arts. Whilst pursuing his studies, he was already taking part in national competitions and group exhibitions.
In 1917 and 1918, in the landscape competition in Masreira, he won silver and gold medals respectively.
In the Art Exhibition of Barcelona in the spring of 1922, he won a medal for his painting “Bodegon” (still life).
To continue developing his ideas and composition of colours and forms, he took part in poster competitions for 10 years, for which he won numerous first class awards.
In 1924 he sent the painting “Maternidad” (maternity) to the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid. It won Third Prize.
In 1925 he won the Gold Medal at the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris.
In 1927 he was awarded a grant at a public competition run by the Barcelona Provincial Council to travel through Italy. In 1929 at the International Exhibition in Barcelona he won Second Prize for his painting “Desnudo” (nude).
In 1930 he had great success at his first one man show at the gallery La Pinoteca in Barcelona.
In 1932 he won Second Prize at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid.
In 1935 he won an award at the National Prize for Painting for his canvas “Adàn y Eva” (Adam Eve).
In 1940 he was made professor at the College of Fine Arts of San Jorge in Barcelona.
He won first prize in painting and second prize in etching at the 1943 National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid.
In 1945 he was made Director of the College of Fine Arts of San Jorge in Barcelona.
In 1950 and 1953 he had great success at exhibitions in Buenos Aires.
In 1967 he won gold medal at the Barcelona Salon.
