ARTIST

RAPHAEL GASPERI

Little is known about this French painter, famous for his ethereal landscapes and depictions of the small historic region of Limousin in central France. Gasperi exhibited his fine oil paintigns at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1886 to 1901 and also frequently at the Société Nationale des Beaux-artswithout interruption from 1901. Gasperi played a significant part in the cultural societies and organization of historic monuments in Corrèze, the rural area of south-western France where he lived for most of his life. Gasperi was a member of the Société Scientifique, Historique et Archéologique of Corrèze and he was one of the founders of a Société des Amis de Collonge. In the summers he worked as a conservator Musée Ernest Rupin (Labenche) in the nearby town of Brive. In 1931, his paintings are documented as purchased by the state, in the cities of Brive, Tulle, Aurillac, Agen, Bergerac, Perigueux. Gasperi was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1931. He died in 1935.
