WALTER HELBIG

Walter Helbig (1883–1968) was a distinguished Swiss painter and printmaker, renowned for his contributions to Expressionism and his mastery of woodcut techniques. Born in Zürich, Helbig’s artistic journey was shaped by his studies at the Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich and subsequent training in Germany and Italy, where he immersed himself in avant-garde movements. A pivotal member of the German Expressionist group "Der Blaue Reiter," Helbig's work reflected bold experimentation with colour, form, and emotion, capturing the spirit of Modernism. Helbig’s art was deeply influenced by nature and the human condition, exploring themes of spirituality and transformation. His oeuvre spans vibrant landscapes, dynamic figure studies, and introspective portraits. Today, Helbig’s works are held in esteemed collections across Europe, celebrating his lasting impact on 20th-century art.
