Celebrated as a “painter of light”, Joseph Raymond Wintz (1884-1956) enjoyed a reputation as one of the finest artists working in France in the early twentieth century. Wintz’ skill and complete command of his palette set him aside from his contemporaries.

  • Joseph Raymond Wintz was born in Paris in 1884. He was the son of the painter Guillaume Wintz (1823-1899) and the husband of the painter Renée Carpentier-Wintz (1913-2003).

He was a student at the École Français, and studied under Jules Adler and G. Ferrier. As a young man Wintz had a brilliant military career before he became a key figure in the Parisian artistic circles of the early twentieth century.

Wintz was described as a ‘painter of light’ and enjoyed a reputation as one of the finest artists working in France at this time. He gained a firm appreciation by critics and collectors as a leading painter of landscapes, sea and harbour scenes.

His inspiration was the picturesque harbours dotted along the Brittany coastline, which he often portrayed through an open cottage door or window.
