Our New Home on Mill Street

Since we opened our gallery on Mill Street in Oakham, in the tiny county of Rutland, so many people visiting the area for the first time have stepped over our threshold extolling the delights of the region. We thought it time we shared a little more about this gem that is our new home.

Mill Street sits at the centre of an ancient town surrounded by honey coloured stone villages and set in a gently rolling landscape near Rutland Water. Our neighbouring businesses, all successful in their own field, are known for championing independence (as we said, resolutely the UKs smallest county) and we find ourselves united by a love of all things beautiful. This year has been a challenging one for so many trades, but hearteningly Mill Street has seen a spate of new shops opening as the local entrepreneurial spirit of the area seizes fresh opportunities.

Our little piece of Oakham is a bustling place, a destination street for people from the surrounding larger counties such as Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire. It’s a melting pot which demonstrates the variety that small independent boutiques offer, from the leading designer fashion retailer in the area to bespoke vintage shops and jewellery designers. As well as another established gallery being located nearby, we currently have a local artist operating out of a pop-up shop and using the space as an impromptu studio. Alongside home furnishing, interior designers and creative lighting shops, we’re proud to join a street where all the businesses are privately owned, built on originality and have a passion for what they do. We now realise we’ve also joined a community that shares ideas and supports (old) newbies such as us.

The area has lots of wonderful places to stay nearby amongst them luxurious Hambleton Hall, an elegant bolthole notable for its fine dining, elegant rooms and magical views over Rutland Water.

The only slight blip on the horizon in our newfound home is that our waist bands have started to expand. There are far too many delicious places to graze on Mill Street from grabbing a gourmet takeaway or a more leisurely naughty treat. Forgive us if we’re gushing, but we really hope to see our London clients up here soon so we can share our beautiful new gallery with you.
