  • George Henry Laporte (c. 1799–1873) was a British painter celebrated for his equestrian, sporting, and animal subjects. The son of watercolorist John Laporte, he followed in his father's artistic footsteps and became one of the notable sporting artists of 19th-century England. Laporte’s work was characterized by a precise, lively depiction of horses, hounds, and hunting scenes, capturing the vigor and elegance of English country pursuits.

    A founding member of the Royal Society of British Artists, Laporte exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and other major venues. His reputation was further bolstered by his appointment as animal painter to the Duke of Cumberland, a role that brought him prestigious commissions and access to aristocratic patrons. In addition to his sporting art, Laporte occasionally painted Orientalist scenes, inspired by travels or popular artistic trends of the time.

    His work is admired for its clarity of composition, lifelike rendering of animals, and ability to capture the dynamic energy of the hunt and the showground.
