Born in 1899 in the Catalonian town of Mataró and taught from the age of twelve by the artist José Mongrell, Luís Muntané Muns demonstrated his talent from a young age, winning both silver and gold at the Masriera landscape competition in his teens. Participating in five consecutive Bercelona Art Exhibitions, he would win a pension to study to Italy before the age of thirty.

Muns specialised as a painter of finely dressed women, swathing them in richly painted dresses. Between his work decorating the interiors of Barcelona’s finest houses, and the success of his intimate female portraits, his paintings evoked the romantic period so in popular in the Spain of the thirties.

His sensitive approach to his subject’s personalities was highly regarded, particularly in his native Barcelona, to the extent that he was made professor of painting at the famed San Jorge Academy of Fine Arts in the city.
