WYCLIFFE EGGINTON | Eilean Donan Castle Moonlight
Watercolour on Paper
51 x 72 cms / 20 x 28¼ inches
Painted by Wycliffe Eggington, this watercolour shows the artist’s long-standing engagement with the Scottish landscape, which formed a significant part of his career from the early twentieth century onwards. Egginton was widely travelled and regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy and developed a reputation for compositions that prioritise light and atmosphere.
Eilean Donan Castle is presented, set against layered hills and misty open water. The moon is pivotal to Egginton’s composition and his handling of paint is measured and deliberate. He uses only a limited palette, an extremely difficult thing to do, demonstrating his mastery of the watercolour medium.
Wycliffe Egginton was a British painter known for landscapes, coastal scenes and architectural views, particularly in Scotland, France and North Africa. He trained in Birmingham before continuing his studies in Antwerp, where he developed a disciplined approach to composition and draughtsmanship that remained consistent throughout his career.
Egginton exhibited regularly at major institutions including the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. His work was well received by both critics and collectors, and he enjoyed a steady market during his lifetime. Rather than pursuing avant-garde developments, he focused on clarity, controlled light and recognisable locations. He often returned to the same subjects to refine their presentation.
Scottish subjects, especially castles and lochs, became a recurring theme, valued for their strong historical presence and atmospheric settings. Today, Egginton’s paintings are held in public and private collections and remain sought after for their technical assurance and beautiful quality.
