John Ambrose perfectly encapsulates the vivid tones of the Grand Canal in Venice. The Santa Maria della Salute rises from the waters.

    • John Ambrose, RSMA (1931-2010), was a British artist who specialised in painting the waterways of Cornwall and Venice, exploring the way that light and colour play on the surface.

Much of his early career was spent as an engineer before training as an artist in the West Midlands. Ambrose found inspiration in the works of D A Chatterton and the wondrous coastal landscapes of Cornwall where he honed his artistic skills. After many years holidaying in Cornwall, Ambrose relocated to St Ives where he lived and painted for 30 years. Ambrose's works show a love of capturing the qualities of water.

From 1992 onwards, John Ambrose frequently visited Venice where he utilised the contrast of colour and tone to depict the atmospheric waterways of the city. In 1989, John Ambrose featured in the Royal Institute of Painters in Oil. The following year he was elected to the Royal Society of Marine Artists where he had been exhibiting since 1985.
