LUCY BOYDELL | The Chillingham Bull
Charcoal and Chalk
106 x 106 cms / 41 ¾ x 41 ¾ inches
Signed Lucy Boydell (lower left)
A striking charcoal drawing capturing the raw power and quiet majesty of a Chillingham bull, one of Britain’s last remaining wild cattle. Rendered in rich, expressive strokes, this monochrome artwork highlights the bull’s iconic curved horns and muscular form, evoking a timeless connection to the ancient landscape of Northumberland.
The famous wild white cattle in Chillingham Park, Northumberland are the only wild cattle in Britain and have been in the Park for at least seven hundred years. Their horns are the closest resemblance to the cave paintings depicting cattle in Lascaux, France.
Simon Schama has described them as ‘’…..perhaps the greatest icon of British natural history, and one loaded with moral, national and historical sentiment as well as purely zoological fascination.’’
Because of their long confinement the Chillingham cattle are of huge biological value. Lucy was lucky enough to be granted access at close quarters to observe and photograph the wild white cattle last year and was struck by the iconic, halo-like curvature of their horns, and their deep open-hearted warmth and trust.
"With no predators and man playing no part in their day to day living, they show no fear and consequently exude an open hearted curiousity and warmth I hadn’t imagined could be present in such a statuesque icon of the cattle world."
