Maurice Canning Wilks was a highly respected British landscape painter, best known for his evocative views of Ireland, particularly the west and north. Born in Norwich, he studied at the Norwich School of Art before settling in Ireland, where the dramatic coastline, shifting weather and expansive light became central to his work.
Wilks painted directly from nature, favouring confident, impressionist brushwork and a fresh, natural palette. His landscapes balance structure with spontaneity, capturing the rhythm of waves, rolling headlands and open skies with clarity and ease.
