ROBERT E. WELLS | Beach, Cornwall
Oil on Canvas
20.3 x 20.3 cms / 8 x 8 inches
Signed 'R E Wells' (lower right)
Wells conjures a Cornish shoreline that feels less like a postcard and more like a memory, half-formed and shimmering. Figures drift across the sand like passing thoughts, their reflections dissolving into the wet surface beneath them. A muted palette of greys and mauves carries the salt-laden air, with sudden flashes of red and purple tugging the eye. It is both beach scene and daydream, a fleeting moment caught before the tide washes it all away.
"Let the work speak for itself." – Robert E. Wells
Robert is a Yorkshire-born artist, known for his cityscape paintings as well as rural landscapes and figurative works, he regularly exhibits his work in solo shows, mainly in the UK. He graduated from the University of East London. After a successful early career as an architectural illustrator and interior design artist, Robert dedicated himself to painting and now spends his time travelling and sketching or working from his studio.
He has exhibited both at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and the New English Arts Club for the last six years, where his subtle yet vibrant palette and evocative scenes have been very well received. In 2006, he was honoured to receive the President’s Choice Awards at the Royal Federation of British Artists, R.B.A. and the following year he won the Daler Rowney Painting Award. Robert is a member of the Royal Society of Painters in Oil and the R.B.A and he is a fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers.
Working mainly in oils with a palette knife his rendering of the streets of London, Venice, and Napoli and his busy harbour scenes convey all of the hustle and bustle of life whilst simultaneously conveying a sense of majesty and mystery. Robert’s depictions of the Yorkshire Dales and Moors painted en plein air are testament to his superb ability to capture light and mood.
Roberts paintings capture a moment in time of everyday life and contain wonderful ambience. Those of you who have visited any of the locations captured in these paintings will be full aware of his mastery of bringing back a memory and securing a lasting reminder of the essence of a place. He is keen to depict cities from a different angle- seeking out an unusual perspective of familiar scene and encouraging the viewer to look into the corner that might otherwise be overlooked.
