Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta (1841–1920) was a Spanish painter celebrated for his refined portraits and elegant genre scenes. Born into a distinguished dynasty of artists in Rome, he trained in Madrid under his father, Federico de Madrazo, before continuing his studies in Paris. There, he absorbed the influence of French academic painting and became associated with society portraiture, admired for his polished technique and exquisite attention to costume and detail.
Madrazo’s sitters included European aristocracy, cultural figures and members of the cosmopolitan elite, his works often conveyed an atmosphere of sophistication and charm. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon and maintained close ties to the thriving artistic circles of the city. His style, characterised by luminous colour, fluid brushwork and a sensitivity to texture, blended Spanish tradition with Parisian elegance.
Today, Madrazo’s paintings are held in major collections worldwide, including the Prado, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Musée d’Orsay, underscoring his place as one of the foremost portraitists of the late 19th century.
