PETER WILEMAN | Estuary Drift
Oil on Canvas
30 x 30 cms / 11¾ x 11¾ inches
Signed 'Wileman' (lower left)
Here, broad horizontal bands echo the slow movement of tidal water, interrupted by textured passages of deeper pigment. Wileman uses palette knife and brush interchangeably, scraping back areas to expose flashes of colour that glimmer like reflected light. The composition breathes with space and stillness, capturing the gentle pull of an estuary where land, water and sky quietly converge.
Known for his dazzling abstracted oil landscapes, Peter Wileman’s style is bold and vigorous, both in the use of colour and handling of paint, as he explores the effect of light on his subject. Seeking atmosphere through light and colour, he works in varying degrees of abstraction.
Wileman’s aim is to capture that elusive quality of light, that only a shimmering sunset, dawn of a new day, dazzling sparkle of reflection off both sea and river presents to one who is prepared to both look and see.
Over the last two decades Peter Wileman has exhibited regularly at a number of prestigious art venues including the Royal Society of Marine Artists, the New England Art Club and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters of which he is an associate member. He has worked in the field of art and design for over forty years.
