Softened edges and luminous blues dominate Held By the Light. The artist's use of light anchors the composition rather than illuminates it. Thin washes are overlaid with thicker, expressive strokes, creating a surface that feels both fluid and tactile. Wileman’s restrained palette allows subtle shifts in tone to carry the painting, suggesting a landscape shaped as much by memory and feeling as by place.
Known for his dazzling abstracted oil landscapes, Peter Wileman’s style is bold and vigorous, both in the use of colour and handling of paint, as he explores the effect of light on his subject. Seeking atmosphere through light and colour, he works in varying degrees of abstraction.
Wileman’s aim is to capture that elusive quality of light, that only a shimmering sunset, dawn of a new day, dazzling sparkle of reflection off both sea and river presents to one who is prepared to both look and see.
Over the last two decades Peter Wileman has exhibited regularly at a number of prestigious art venues including the Royal Society of Marine Artists, the New England Art Club and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters of which he is an associate member. He has worked in the field of art and design for over forty years.
