Robert Richardson’s Lake Limone captures the luminous atmosphere of alfresco dining on the shores of Lake Garda. Utilising in a fluid, impressionistic style, the composition is alive with dappled light and gestural brushwork. The interaction of figures, foliage and glistening lake are remiscent of timeless Mediterranean leisure. This expressive painting exemplifies Richardson’s ability to distil light and movement, offering a sun-drenched vision that is both painterly and poetic.
Born in 1938 in Salford, Lancashire, Robert Richardson followed a conventional path through art school before stepping into the commercial world of advertising. Yet, even as his career progressed in advertising, his passion for painting grew alongside it. By 1975, he made the pivotal decision to become a full-time artist. That choice was richly rewarded with a string of accolades, including the prestigious Grand Prix from the Confederation of British Artists at the Mall Galleries in 1991.
Richardson’s works have since found homes in the collections of cultural institutions, corporate giants, and influential private collectors — from the Salford Art Gallery to the walls of Baroness Thatcher and Bill Wyman. As a proud member of the Pastel Society, he remains a fixture in the British contemporary art scene, celebrated for his evocative landscapes, seascapes, and atmospheric street scenes.
Richardson’s mastery of pastel is both technical and emotional. His touch is light, but his compositions feel structurally solid, a testament to his years of training and a keen observational eye. Working directly from life, he brings a sense of immediacy to his scenes, while his palette — often sunlit and atmospheric — conveys a warmth and sense of invitation.
Influenced by Impressionism and British en plein air traditions, Richardson strikes a balance between suggestive abstraction and clear representation.
