Dappled Reflections captures the shimmering reflections of Venice, where historic façades and moored gondolas are mirrored in softly rippling water. Bathed in warm, shifting light, the scene evokes the quiet rhythm of the lagoon, with architecture and reflections dissolving into one another to create a sense of calm movement and timelessness. Begarat’s approach is defined by a richly broken surface and a vibrant, high-key palette. Short, expressive brushstrokes construct form through colour rather than line, allowing light, water and reflection to merge with impressionistic freedom, and transforming the familiar Venetian setting into a luminous study of atmosphere and place.

  • Eugène Begarat was born in 1943 and after deciding to take the traditional artistic route to training he joined the École des Arts Decoratifs, Nice in 1960 and then studied at the École Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris in 1964. Now living and working in Vence, France he uses his garden as the main source of inspiration for his artworks. Before he settled in Vence much of his painting explored Brittany, following the influence of the École de Pont-Aven and the Nabis, with artists such as Felix Valoton and Maurice Denis. Later into his career and taking ideas from the Post-Impressionists, Begarat's style demonstrates close affinities with the work of Seurat and Signac, as he adopts the "divisionist" technique, juxtaposing colours in quick, small brushstrokes. You can see his working with areas of bold, luminous colouring reminiscent of Paul Gaugin.
