JACQUES MEUGNIER | Hiver à la Borne
Signed 'J Meugnier' (lower right)
Oil on Canvas
39 x 46 cms / 15¼ x 18 inches
In Hiver à la Borne, Meugnier explores the hush of a snow-covered village. Inspired by seasonal stillness, he uses a softly layered surface and a restrained, luminous palette to evoke cold light and muted sound. His technique relies on broken colour and delicate texture, creating an intimate mood that rewards close, contemplative viewing.
Jacques Meugnier was born in Paris in 1951. He studied painting in his home city, but he himself considers his most important teacher to be the museums of Paris. Between 1973 and 1975 he spent much of his time copying the city’s impressionist masterpieces, particularly those at the Jeu de Paume centre in the Tuileries.
From the start of his career, Meugnier was best known for his richly textured and warm-hued treatments of the countryside of Normandy and Brittany. By 1980 he had established himself firmly as a leading Impressionist landscape painter in Paris. In this period he exhibited across the world, including shows in Japan and the United States. Today, his wok is included in numerous private collections, and in public institutes such as the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer.
