Oil on Board

33 x 41 cms / 13 x 16¼ inches

Hartmann’s lakeside scene reflects a lyrical response to calm water and open sky. Inspired by moments of stillness, he employs soft tonal transitions and fluid brushwork to dissolve forms into atmosphere. The artist's technique favours harmony over detail, allowing reflections and gentle colour shifts to convey depth, tranquillity and a quiet sense of balance within the natural setting.

  • Werner Hartmann was born in Emmen in 1903 to German parents. After initial training as a teacher, he moved to Paris in 1923 to study painting at the Académie Julian under André Lhote. He exhibited in Paris by 1925 and soon became part of the city’s avant garde, forming close friendships with artists including Max Ernst.

During the 1930s he exhibited widely at major Parisian salons, travelled extensively in the Mediterranean and Morocco, and received a solo exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Luzern in 1934. He represented Switzerland at the Venice Biennale in 1936, and in 1938 a work was acquired by the French State.

Returning to Switzerland in 1940, Hartmann taught at the Lucerne Academy of Fine Arts and continued to work between Switzerland and Paris until his death in 1981.
